Open the app: the camera starts on its own. Point it at the text, then drag the yellow slider at the bottom of the screen to the right to magnify (up to 10 times).
That is exactly what the "Freeze" button is for (blue, in the middle). Tap it: the image is captured and stops moving. You can then zoom in calmly with two fingers, like on a photo.
Tip: the voice works even if your phone is on silent. Just turn the volume up with the buttons on the side of the phone.
It only appears after you have frozen the image: tap "Freeze" first (the blue button in the middle), and "Listen" then takes the place of "Light", on the left.
Three things help a lot: move closer to the text, turn on the Light if it's dim, and magnify before tapping "Freeze". The sharper and bigger the text is on screen, the better it is read.
You have probably tapped the "Contrast" button. Tap it once or twice more to return to the normal display (it cycles through: normal → boosted black and white → inverted colours).
